چکیده

In this work, we examine and attempt to extend the coverage of a German HPSG grammar. We use the grammar to parse a corpus of newspaper text and evaluate the proportion of sentences which have a correct attested parse, and analyse the cause of errors in terms of lexical or constructional gaps which prevent parsing. Then, using a maximum entropy model, we evaluate prediction of lexical types in the HPSG type hierarchy for unseen lexemes. By automatically adding entries to the lexicon, we observe that we can increase coverage without substantially decreasing precision.

Efficient Parsing with Large-Scale Unification Grammars

The efficiency problem in parsing with large-scale unification grammars, including implementations in the Head-driven Phrase Structure grammar (HPSG) framework, used to be a serious obstacle to their application in research and commercial settings. Over the past few years, however, significant progress in efficient processing has been achieved. Still, many of the proposed techniques were develo...

An HPSG Parser Supporting Discontinuous Licenser Rules

We present an HPSG parser which can process discontinuous licenser rules in grammars with continuous constituents. We demonstrate how licenser rules can be used to reduce the parser’s search space by applying them to the analysis of German main clauses with a right sentence bracket and to complement extraposition. Before discussing the parser and the licenser rule technique, we would like to re...

An HPSG-Analysis for Free Relative Clauses in German

At the moment there is no theory for free relative clauses in German in the framework of Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG) (Pollard and Sag, 1994). From GB literature on the subject it is known that free relative clauses behave partly like noun phrases. They can fill argument positions of verbs. And although they are finite sentences, they are serialized like noun phrases in the Germa...

Passed the Age of Puberty: Organizational Networks as a Way to Get Things Done in the Health Field; Comment on “Evaluating Global Health Partnerships: A Case Study of a Gavi HPV Vaccine Application Process in Uganda”

In this commentary I will demonstrate that the case study of Uganda’s Human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine application partnership provides an excellent example of widening our lens by evaluating the successful HP vaccine coverage from a network-centric perspective. That implies that the organizational network is seen as the locus of production and that network theories become indispensable to a...

Robust PCFG-Based Generation Using Automatically Acquired LFG Approximations

Wide coverage grammars automatically extracted from treebanks are a corner-stone technology in state-ofthe-art probabilistic parsing. They achieve robustness and coverage at a fraction of the development cost of hand-crafted grammars. It is surprising to note that to date, such grammars do not usually figure in the complementary operation to parsing – natural language surface realisation. Banga...
